I hope you have enjoyed the projects coming out of my #12MonthsOfDIY crafting challenge group. I’ve really felt privileged to work with these inspiring, creative, amazing women. These are all women with unique experiences and perspectives and talents, and I loved watching them mix it all together to create something beautiful for us to enjoy.

I didn’t know most of them when I started, and I think many of the other women were in the same boat. We had only connected virtually. But guess what? Everyone was lovely. And supportive of each other. And kind, and positive, and helpful. And willing to share information. We all learned from each other. What’s the big moral of the story here? This is what women can do for each other. This is the potential we have if we just put ourselves out there a little, and offer our best selves to each other. Even to strangers! It’s this sort of attitude that can make cool things happen.

How did this all start? One person had an idea, and went with it. It was Christina from The DIY Mommy who started this up if I remember correctly. She posted a comment in a blogger Facebook group, then this project came to life from there. Christina also put in the time to keep the group organized. Head over to her blog – you won’t be sorry. This is a woman who has 4 children, blogs full time, and creates the most beautiful projects to share with her readers. Just look at her home, and you’ll get an idea of the kind of mad creative skills this lady has. Most importantly, she is NICE. Really and truly lovely. She can out-blog me by a mile any day, but she’s happy to share and pass along a little of her hard-won skills to other bloggers who need them. And I could say the same thing about all the other women in the group. Mad skills. And lovely to boot.

Here’s the thing. Aren’t these women a lot like all of us? A lot like you? We’ve all got our thing – our perspective, our skills and talents. This group was a great example of how amazing it can be when women get together in a collaborative and supportive way. It doesn’t have to be about blogging or crafts. I think some of the best women support happens over a bottle of wine. Ultimately, that’s what I’ll really be taking away from this group – a reminder of how much I really need my women friends.

Now, this post was actually supposed to be about my favourite project from this series. For that, I guess I’d have to choose my daisy frame art. Why? Because it has daisies, and I love daisies. But really it’s because of what happened to this little project. It’s dressing up my youngest girl’s university dorm, hanging over her dresser. I visited her last week, and saw it up along with my ribbon tassel garland, which was hanging over her door. I made both projects with her in mind, and put a little extra love into them, so it made me feel really good that they were putting a touch of home into her home-away-from-home.

Really, my favourite crafts are always those that create a tiny little ripple of something in the world. Even really, really tiny. Like my first project – the felt notebook covers I made. I gave them to my girls and one of their friends this summer, as all 3 girls were getting ready to go off to school. I thought they could use them to make their lists, and get organized. Just a little touch of mothering for them as they started putting together independent lives.

The striped carafe? That reminds me of summer at the cottage, because that’s where I made it. It’s bright and cheery when I pull it out of the cupboard. The quilled snowflake? It’s sitting in my living room, making a corner a little prettier. And my last project, the yarn wall hanging with the broken heart – that’s going to add a bit of warmth to a basement hallway. And it’s given me a little macramé bug, so who knows what might show up in the future?

I think that’s the moral of the story. When we put our unique creative talents into things, it can create a ripple effect that makes things better. A lot better, or even just the tiniest bit better. It’s what Christina did when she started this group, it’s what the ladies did when they created their inspiring projects, and I bet it’s what YOU do all the time without even noticing it!

That’s an awful lot of philosophizing for one blog post, right? How about move on to talking about these other ladies’ fav projects! Click on the project name to visit their project post, and their blog name to visit their blog and see their last #12MonthsofDIY post. They’ll all be sharing some thoughts on what they thought of our yearly challenge. And you can spend some time getting to know them and their blogs a little better. I promise you won’t be sorry!
