Billy’s In The Bedroom

Posted by Dani on September 27, 2012

Did you know that there have been over 41 million IKEA Billy bookcases sold worldwide? That’s cause Billy’s the boss.

And Billy’s great when you invite him into the bedroom. He can serve all of a girls’ needs.

I’m talking about storage needs here, people. Shoes, bags, accessories, clothes – Billy is any closet-challenged girl’s dream guy.

I’ve had a wall of white Billy bookcases in my space-deprived bedroom for years – a perfect solution while I am waiting for the big reno.

The IKEA Billy white bookshelf and Morebo aluminum-framed white glass door combo has a fresh, modern look, and at only 11” deep, take up minimal space. You’d be surprised just how much can fit into one of those puppies. You can see them in this post, where I took on a Toss-50-Things Challenge.

Lately, I was visiting a good friend who just recently used Billy to add much-needed storage to her bedroom. She moved to a gorgeous downtown condo while looking for a more permanent place, and needed a quick and easy storage solution. You can’t go wrong with Ikea – they delivered and assembled her great wall of Billy, and presto, problem solved. The best part was that Billy now comes 13” deep – perfect for storing all your favourite things. You could almost hear her gorgeous camel Louboutins sighing happily.

Here’s a few shots of her set up to inspire you. There is actually room to sort things by colour and season! Sigh…….

This is the kind of think that makes my heart sing. And my shoes feel a little envious.

I’m in love with your friend’s closet and set up! You can add doors to the Billy bookcase now? I didn’t know that!!

I’m in love with her closet too 😉 And it does inspire me to create more order in my own storage area. And the Billy cases have been amazing for storage for me – I use them in the bedroom and in my craft area. Everything is at my fingertips!

Hi, love the closet, but I really love that painting in your hallway outside of the room. Could you give me some information on it–where you got it, who the artist is, etc. I LOVE IT!!

Hi Dani,I know you’ve posted this a loooong time ago, but Ikea Billy is timeless, and we soooo appreciate it when people like you share these awesome ideas with the rest of us! I’ve been craving some pretty, simple & practical inspiration , and this article did it for me… Thanks

Thank you so much for your kind words! So true – the Billy is timeless. I have used it in several places in my home at different times – crafts, extra laundry room storage, and lately I am loving it for shoes. Thanks for dropping in!

I could not find a deeper (13″) Billy on the IKEA website. The PAX series does have a shallower model that’s about 13″. I have an average shoe size, an 8, but sometimes a couple inches more would be a big help…like boots, folded ski pants, etc. Or if using as a china cabinet platters and a few other things leave the doors ajar and you have to figure out how to stand it up.
Are they in the store? I haven’t actually been inside one in a while!

Thanks for your comment! I hear you about the depth. These shelves were purchased 2 or 3 years ago, so I’m not sure if Ikea still sells the 13″ size. I have a traditional 11″ unit I use for storage. For shoes that are a little big, I store them sideways and they fit just fine. I also store larger things like beach towels in my unit, by folding them a little smaller. It works for me, but you may have to give it a try to see if you like it. Good luck!

How are you able to obtain so many shelves? I believe the standard number of shelves you get with a Billy bookshelf is 5. And your friend has at least 9 shelves in her shoe unit. Your reply is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    • Dani says:

Ikea sells extra shelves for the Billy units, so you can get as many as you need!

You also used to be able to buy a height extender for Billy to make it taller…you place the one-shelf attachment on top of the bookcase and Billy is one shelf higher. Hope they still make it….very great article!
