There is no better reminder of summer weekends than seeing a child messing around in a pile of sand. The Parks Canada exhibit this year was a fantastic example of interactive outdoor areas integrated into their natural surroundings. Activities that focused on making musical sounds, playing in the sand, sliding and climbing were a great source of ideas when planning your outdoor spaces with kids in mind. While good design is always important, I’m kind of surprised you don’t see more material out there with the child audience in mind. There’s a great idea here for the regular homeowner, think about creating your child’s special “areas” throughout your outdoor landscapes and installing pieces that are interactive but also look great. Parks did a great job this year, here are some of the highlights:
Outdoor xylophone makes beautiful music.
Outdoor miniature patio area in natural wood.
Outdoor slide integrated into walkway.
Outdoor metal features create beautiful sounds and look fantastic.
