DIY Marimekko Side Table

This project gets 5 stars – easy, cheap, fast and gorgeous!

We were invited to participate in a fantastic fun project for decorating.answers.com.  Here’s the brief in a nutshell: up cycle anything and give us your before and afters.  I’ve been known to jump at a challenge, that insanely competitive side of me wakes up and gets laser focused.  Bonus?  Looking around the house for some ‘junk’ that could use some love to be transformed is right up my alley.  Not to mention, I am in the middle of getting ready to move so I have been cleaning out basements, closets and cold rooms that happened to be filled with ‘projects’ oozing potential.  Shopping in my basement ‘pile of items ready to be shipped to Goodwill’ seemed too good to be true.  Shopping in the crafting corner of my basement paid off too.

The recipe for up-cycle fabulousness right in my basement.

There was a pack of gorgeous Marimekko napkins waiting for a decoupage project.  This is a great way to use Marimekko‘s fab bright happy designs, without the steep price tag of their fabrics.  I picked these up at EQ3 for a mere $6.95 and they were waiting for this project.  Next I found this ratty trumpet shaped vintage table base and a glass table topper I thought would be perfect.  These old school table toppers protected your table cloths and can be found at Walmart or Michaels for under 20 bux.  Brilliant!  Here’s a sneak peek at our project with some DIY instructions.  Be sure to check out decorating.answers.com for the rest.

DIY side table components

Basement finds sparked some side table inspiration!

1. Treat the table base with liquid sandpaper.
2. Spray paint with short bursts keeping can angled at about a foot away.  Plan to apply a couple of coats.

3. Decoupage one side of the glass topper with the napkin pieces.  You can use them whole or in pieces.  I used Podgy brand decoupage product.  Let dry thoroughly.  You may want to re apply an additional layer of decoupage liquid and re smooth any air bubbles the following day.  Handle the napkins with care, as they can come apart easily when wet.

4. Adhere table top to base with Le Page Tough As Nails.
5. Enjoy all the compliments you get on your project!
