Like everyone else this time of year, I have storage and organization on my mind. And not just any storage. Pretty storage. Because that’s the kind of thing that gets me psyched. Psyched enough to stay on this organization bandwagon I’m on.
And you know what will help you stay on your own organization bandwagon? Winning our giveaway for a $150 HomeSense gift card so you can bring home some of their pretty and practical organizing products! You’ll want to read through to the end and enter.
When HomeSense approached us recently to take a creative look at organizing an area of the house, I knew right away what I wanted to do. Have you been in any of their stores lately? They have a fab collection of baskets in all shapes and sizes, all at a reasonable price. I decided the Billy bookcases in my daughter’s room had to go, and I’d replace them with an eclectic mix of wire and wicker baskets.
My oldest is a real book lover, and has also inherited our collection of LPs which she plays regularly. Her room is a fun mish mash of vintage finds and retro inspired odds and ends. It’s colourful, quirky, and totally her. The only thing that didn’t fit in with her look were the 2 Ikea bookcases. Practical – yes. Personal? Not so much.
Here is the before picture. Definitely in need of a makeover, right?
I knew I’d find the solution at my favourite decorating hangout, HomeSense. As usual, they did not disappoint. There was a huge selection of baskets in all shapes and sizes, including many great choices with a vintage vibe that I knew would suit Olivia’s room perfectly.
I decided to mix it up, and filled up the car with a great selection of coloured wire, wood, and wicker baskets. One of the things I especially love about HomeSense is their generous return policy (30 days for loyalty card holders), which is perfect for a project like this. I find the best way is to buy a few more than you need, and then play with the different combinations until you find a look that works.
Here’s a trick I used to design the layout. I knew how much wall space I had to fill with baskets, based on the size of the bookcases. I set up templates for the size I wanted with masking tape on the floor, and then placed the baskets in different configurations until I got it right. I marked off the locations of the baskets on the tape itself, and then transferred the entire taped rectangle to the wall with my hubbys help. That gave him a drilling template right on the wall where he needed it. This made installing the basket wall super easy. He used screws and washers right through the back of the baskets, and they feel pretty solid on the wall.
This is the basket wall, before being filled. The cabinet is the bottom half of a dining room hutch that I found at Value Village. I removed the doors and painted it yellow – perfect for her collection of records.
Below are some close-up shots of the baskets. You can see how cute they look filled up with her books and favourite objects. She even had room for a collection of vintage children’s books that belonged to me. These baskets hold a surprising amount of stuff – I had no problem fitting in everything she wanted. And there’s room to spare!
I think this basket storage wall adds a lot of personality to her room. It’s unique, pretty, and functional at the same time. It’s straightforward to install. And I think it makes the contents look more special. I’d love it if all my furniture worked this hard for me!
And now for the fun part. Want some cute baskets of your own? Or maybe some beautiful boxes and trays to organize your jewelry and accessories?
