Rearrange the letters in Missoni and you get “mission”. And that’s exactly what we were on last week when we left Toronto for a road trip to the Buffalo burbs in search of the legendary Italian brand’s low priced line for Target. The line launched September 13, and determined to hit Target in time for the 8 AM opening, we decided to head down the day before and make a girls night of it. After arriving, we scoped out our favourite Target store and stocked up on Mossimo’s Long and Lean tank tops, then warmed up our shopping skills at Saks Off Fifth, where I scored a pair of BCBG casual boots for just $69.99, down from $400. Not a bad start! A little more shopping and then we were ready to head back to the hotel to check out Target Style on Facebook.
A quick look on the net had us worried – the buzz for the Missoni launch had grown to epic proportions, and people were predicting huge lineups and sellouts. Pooling our best analytical problem-solving skills, we developed a strategy and chose a Target location that was a little off the beaten track, at least for us. And the following morning at 8:00 am we hit the Missoni Motherload: a quiet Target with only 2 Missoni shoppers – us!
We had the entire inventory to ourselves for about half an hour, enough time to find some of our top picks from the collection. We were surprised at the quality of the low priced line. Many of the clothes looked even better after trying them on. And some of the housewares were stunning! One thing that struck us was how well the dissonant patterns worked together. Here’s a shot of 5 hand towels – I wouldn’t normally mix these, and yet somehow they look great together. Perfect for layering.
Our top picks from the housewares collection were the throws, duvets, and towels in luxurious colours, the chic martini glasses, and the espresso cup set in mixed patterns. We loved the stylish carry on luggage and laptop cases. And must-haves from the extensive clothing line include the rain boots, the long knit cardigans, the sweater skirts, the ruana wraps and infinity scarves, and the always-classic shorter knit cardigans. Unfortunately we weren’t able to see the knit bathing suits, the jumpsuit, the outdoor sectional, and the rugs, which we think we might have loved but were not comfortable with ordering sight unseen. All in all, it was a gorgeous collection. While we were pretty lucky in getting some of the pieces we wanted, many other people didn’t and it’s a shame that the quantities available were so limited. More inventory next time, Target!
