Here’s a little slice of heaven, sampling port in the ancient caverns of Porto, Portugal. Porto is the world capital of port production. Located along the Douro River, Porto it is registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is a gorgeous, very old and romantic city, and one thing everyone does while in Porto in visit the ancient caverns over the bridge where you can tour a port factory. These are traditions soaked in ancient history and the wine has been produced in the same manner for centuries.
My husband and I took our time wandering around the old port, admiring the buildings on a dark, cloudy day along the legendary river. We had a chance to visit Burmester, which had been around since the late 1700′s. It produces one of the world’s best ports and we spent some time exploring the ancient barrels. Have a look.
