Hello Santa!

Posted by Dani on December 12, 2011

I love “accidental” traditions, things you start doing without much thought that end up creating lasting and meaningful memories. The Playmobil Advent Calendar is a great example. I happened to find one on sale at Winners years ago, when the girls were still quite young and loved counting down the days to Christmas. We had been buying advent calendars from the local German deli, the kind with little chocolates behind the windows. Happy to cut out their daily morning chocolate habit, I decided to give the Playmobil calendar a try. Each day the girls opened a window to find a tiny figure or accessory that they could add to a cardboard backdrop to create a Christmas scene.

This was our first experience with these toys, and I was amazed at how charming the details were. We were hooked, and have bought one every year since. The themes are different for each calendar. Mrs. Claus might be baking in an old-fashioned kitchen, and the girls would be delighted to find mini rolling pins and baking utensils, trays of sweet treats, or a basket with tiny sleeping kittens to keep her company as she worked. Another year, Santa might be feeding the animals in the forest, and the numbered windows would offer up families of squirrels, birds, and deer. This year the theme is Santa’s Post Office – he’s making a list and checking it twice!

Over the years, we have accumulated a large basket of Christmas related Playmobil pieces, and some years we pull them out to create a large scene that covers the dining room sideboard. The girls are older now, but it’s kind of fun to keep some of their childhood traditions – Christmas is a time when even teenagers get a little sentimental! And my hubby and I got another Christmas tradition of our own – putting these “assembly-required” calendars together late the night of November 31, usually with a glass of wine to help our patience. This year we got a break from that custom since Santa’s Post Office came ready-to-go. But I think the November 31 glass of wine might be a good tradition to keep!
