Spotted: What is This Bike Saying?

Last week I posted about a piece of installation art I stumbled across in NYC. Coincidentally, on a morning stroll this past weekend in downtown Toronto, I came across this painted bike attached to a street side sign. I wondered if this was the same kind of idea and decide to Google upon my return home. Imagine my delight when I found out that a local Toronto group of artists had installed these across the city. The Good Bike art project was conceived by Caroline Macfarlane, who painted an abandoned bike outside the OCAD Student Gallery where she works. The city originally threatened to have the piece removed, but after a public outcry a larger city sanctioned art project began. Since then, MacFarlane and OCAD colleague Vanessa Nicholas have salvaged about 50 bikes from the dump, painted them and installed them all over the city. The bike outside the gallery has been turned into a memorial for Jack Layton, with excerpts from his letters taped to the handlebars and wheels. Some people have decided to enhance the art pieces, drawing on them, adding to them, affixing stickers and tags. It’s interesting to see the pieces evolve, almost like an organic, interactive installation. Read more about the project at good bike art project .

Look for them around the city – so cool!

They even created a spray painting playlist – check it out on their tumblr site ( I love posting with my iPad and iPhone working in tandem!)
