I came across these gorgeous shots taken by my daughter recently of the sunflowers in our front garden and thought I would post them to brighten up this cold rainy fall day. Every spring we scatter a few seeds in the perennial bed in our front yard, just mixed randomly between the flowers. It’s crowded and a little chaotic, but we love seeing these happy giants mingling with our regular flowers. Usually there’s a big battle of wills with the squirrels who love to eat our seeds. This year we discovered a secret weapon in the squirrel war: a little blood meal sprinkled over the seeds was all that was needed to keep them away. These shots were taken a few weeks ago. Since then the seeds have ripened and the flowers look a little sad, but I like to leave them out anyway for the birds and squirrels to feast on.
