The Easiest Flower Arrangement

Posted by Dani on July 14, 2014

DIY easy hosta leaf arrangement
3 hosta leaves. Glass vase. 30 seconds.

That’s all you need to make this simple and beautiful arrangement.

I threw one together for my recent Summer Oasis backyard party for a few of my girlfriends. Summer’s all about taking it easy, and this arrangement fit the bill perfectly.

Hostas are plentiful, and if you don’t have any of your own, I’m sure you can snag a few leaves from a neighbour. But I’d suggest growing them for yourself. They’re fairly foolproof and require very little care once established.

Here’s one quick tip: plant a few giant varieties, and you’ll have an abundant supply of large leaves to create dramatic arrangements. I ordered some huge hostas online a few years ago from here, and they are just gorgeous. Don’t be alarmed when you get a few tiny roots in the mail – they’ll soon grow to the full sized plants you want.

This arrangement is cheap, it’s quick, and best of all – it lasts forever. Here’s a photo of the same leaves 2 weeks later. I hadn’t even changed the water, and they were still in perfect condition. You can’t really go wrong.

  1. This is one of my favorite things, and yours look great! No water change? Amazing!! I had no idea you could order hostas online – thanks for the tip!!

Those leaves lasted almost 3 weeks! And the water stayed fresh – there must be something in the hosta leaves that keeps it that way. Easiest arrangement ever!

Hosta leaves look so much more exotic in a vase! Fab idea! Now, if only I could grow hostas!

  3. Katie says:

Wow, just a few leaves make a big impact! I definitely need to order some for my garden. Awesome!

    • Dani says:

The best thing is to get some cuttings from friends who have some. Hostas are so easy to divide and share. And try to get your hands on some giant ones – they are worth looking for!

  4. Terri says:

it’s simple but it looks great with anything, has a welcome feel to it

I LOVE hostas! I really need to plant some next year. That is the perfect arrangement for them!

    • Dani says:

They are the easiest plants to grow. I’ve used them in neglected corners of my garden, and they always manage to do well. It takes a year or 2 for them to get established, but then they are practically maintenance free!

You always have these quick and easy decorating ideas that look so good. Thanks for the inspiration once again!

  7. Le sigh – reason number 800(or so) why I want a place with a garden – free flowers and things for pretty arrangements. These look lovely!

    • Dani says:

Thanks Michelle! Do you have a patio? I have some hostas that grow in containers, too. Maybe your condo could plant some and you could “borrow” a few leaves here and there 😉

  8. Steph says:

I do this too – so freaking easy and awesome result!

    • Dani says:

So true, right? The big thing for me was planting some giant-leaf hostas – they are really dramatic. Can’t get any easier!

  9. Heather says:

So pretty! I love our hostas too – tons of color and texture packed in one plant!

    • Dani says:

They were not my favourite plant early in my gardening days. But they have done an awesome job for me in the garden, and now that I bring them in – they do a great job indoors too!
