I really try my best to avoid rush hour traffic whenever possible, but the odd time I find myself sitting in some gridlock on one of the many clogged downtown streets I always notice all the cyclists riding by. It wasn’t that long ago that the majority of cyclists on the downtown streets were primarily bike couriers. There are more and more bike lanes being added throughout the city and there seem to be many more bikers out there, getting to work, getting some exercise, and exploring the wide array of Toronto parks and trails.
I recently moved back from Montreal which is a huge biking city. It was impossible not to notice the amount of bikers on the road at all times of the day and it seems there are Bixi stands on every other block. (Here’s some Bixi trivia – The Mayor of London gifted two Bixi bikes to Prince William and Kate for their wedding!) Cycling is quickly catching up here in TO and this June is National Bike Month. There’s a ton of events, rides and festivals, but the main message is get out there and bike! Check out more info and the Bike Month 2012 calendar here.
