Another huge highlight from our visit to the big apple was the chance to stop into the Whitney to take in the Kusama exhibit.  Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist, writer, sculptor, designer, painter and novelist whose iconic career chronicles her fascination with psychedelic colours, repetition and pattern.  She arrived in the US in the late 50’s and quickly became a fixture in the avant grade art community with happenings such as body painting festivals, fashion shows and anti war demonstrations.  Her work has been known to have influenced the likes of Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell and Claes Oldenburg, and one of her most recent projects include a collaboration with Marc Jacobs on a flirty and eclectic line for Louis Vuitton

Make sure to check out the Louis Vuitton website dedicated to her work and this project – it is amazing.  At 84, she is still going strong , with a recent work selling in 2008 by Christies for a record $5.1 million.  Her latest installation at the Whit spans six decades of work and is nothing short of breathtaking.   As well, the exhibit includes an enormous collection of media clippings, press releases, announcements, letters and personal notes, showcasing her global presence and interaction with some of that era’s most popular and iconic figures. What a fascinating women, check out my video of her installation as well as some shots of the latest Louis Vuitton windows inspired by her and her work.
