Growing up, I dreaded “Clean Day.” This was always Saturday in my home, and even at a young age I was expected to help out. Definitely not my favourite day of the week! At that age, I didn’t really appreciate how nice it was to live in a home that was well taken care of.
When I first moved out, I tried to stick to a weekly cleaning schedule. It was fairly manageable in the early years when I lived in a small rental apartment or in my first home, a tiny bungalow. Once the kids came and life got more complicated, the weekly cleaning plan flew out the window. In order to keep up, I had to fit the cleaning chores in when I could.
These days, life is still a little complicated and I try to keep up as best I can. Although I LOVE it when the whole house is clean, I can’t say I enjoy the process very much. So when Mrs. Meyer’s contacted me about trying out some of their cleaning products, I jumped at the chance. Cute vintage-style bottles filled with plant-derived ingredients and essential oils? Sign me up! As Mrs. Meyer herself says, “If you can make cleaning more pleasant, well, why wouldn’t you?”
There are a lot of other great reasons to love Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day products. One big one for me is that they are formulated with real essential oils. The box of products smelled amazing when it arrived at my door! I find I love anything containing essential oils, and these products are no exception. It’s great to be able to get a touch of aromatherapy as I clean. I also love that the products use plant-based ingredients but don’t compromise on performance. They provide an ingredient glossary on the site where you can find out more about what goes into these products.
Also important to me is what they don’t do. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day products don’t contain ammonia, chlorine, glycol solvents, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, artificial colorants, phosphates or petroleum distillates. That’s a big mouthful! What’s important to know is that those are the kinds of ingredients you want to avoid wherever possible. I’m a Chemical Engineer, and trust me when I say we’re overloaded with all kinds of chemicals in our daily lives, and we should jump at the chance to cut that back whenever we can.
Another biggie – they don’t test their products on animals. I love that, pure and simple.
Besides the amazing smell, the big issue of course is how these products work. The first product out of the box for me was the Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Hand Soap. This time of year, I wash my hands frequently and pay the price with dry chapped hands. Not with this product, though. The aloe vera and olive oil in the ingredients left my hands feeling clean but soft and definitely not try. This was a big win for me.
In the kitchen, the Clean Day Dish Soap was a pleasure to use. One of my pet peeves with green cleaners is that they just don’t cut grease on dirty dishes, but this soap did a great job. I also loved the Clean Day All-Purpose Cleaner for the kitchen counters and cabinets. I keep my bottle handy and use it to wipe up spills on the appliances and floor too. I tried it out on the bathroom sink and fixtures, and it left them gleaming.
The Clean Day Multi-Surface Concentrate is a great general cleaner for surfaces and floors. I used it to mop up my tiled floors and even the wood floor in my kitchen. It’s concentrated so a little goes a long way, and you can always use it in a stronger mix if the situation is extra grimey!he fresh, non-chemical smell afterwards was my favourite part! Every time I cleaned something or washed my hands, the room was filled with a light scent of Lavender, Lemon Verbena, Basil or Honeysuckle. How can that not make you feel great?
