Shakespeare In High Park

I crossed an item off my Toronto bucket list last week – Shakespeare In High Park. I’ve been meaning to go for years and years, but it’s one of those Toronto traditions that for some reason just kept eluding me. And after watching a delightful performance of As You Like It last week in the gorgeous open-air amphitheatre, I can’t imagine what took me so long.

It was an entertaining performance – fun and fast paced. This play might actually have done what all those high school English teachers tried so hard, and failed, to do – turn me into a fan of the Bard.

The setting was gorgeous, with a backdrop of huge trees behind the stage. The audience sat on tiered grass “seats”, pulled out their blankets and snacks, and settled in for 90 minutes of lively entertainment under the stars. I can’t imagine a nicer way to see a play.

The Canadian Stage Company is also performing Titus Andronicus this year, on alternating nights, for a double bill that’s the perfect mix of love and hate. It’s pay-what-you-can at the gate, or you can get reserved tickets on line. Make sure to put it on the top of your list this summer.

I can’t believe I waited so long to finally see it! I’ll be making this an annual trip for sure. Thanks for dropping in!

I was there and I saw As You Like it too. It was a pleasant show: cheerful, solidly acted and romantic. I loved the stage and the costumes! It’s really great that we have this tradition in Toronto, it’s a nice way to enjoy a summer evening in the park.

Here’s my review, I can see that we’ve used similar photos. Isn’t Canadian Stage great, to provide the photos? I often find that people aren’t that willing to give that permission to someone, so it’s really nice when you bump into someone that’s happy to let you use their material.

    Have a great one,

Great comments Elli – so true. We all loved the show, and plan on returning for Titus Andronicus. What a great Toronto summer tradition!
